On paper, the BMW M8 Competition and BMW M4 Competition sit in the same performance world. Both are seriously quick, both carry the full M badge and both deliver more performance than you’ll realistically ever need on the road. But in reality, they feel very different.
Two Fast Cars, Two Very Different Personalities
The first thing that stands out is how each car delivers its performance. The M4 Competition feels sharp from the moment you get behind the wheel. It’s lighter on its feet, more aggressive and constantly feels like it’s ready to be pushed. It suits tighter roads, quick direction changes and that early Sunday morning drive where you actually want to feel everything the car is doing. It’s playful. It’s energetic. It feels like it’s always trying to prove a point. The M8 Competition, on the other hand, takes a completely different approach.
The M8 Competition: Effortless Performance
BMW built the 8 Series as a luxury car first. It was designed to have presence, comfort and road presence. Then they turned it into an M car, and that’s where things get interesting, because what you end up with is something that doesn’t feel like it needs to try. The M8 Competition is powered by a twin-turbo V8, capable of 0–60mph in around 3.1 seconds, which puts it firmly into supercar territory. But it doesn’t shout about it in the same way. It’s calmer. More composed. It delivers its speed in a way that feels effortless. In the real world, both cars are just as quick as each other. The difference is how that speed feels. The M4 is intense. The M8 is controlled.
Presence vs Playfulness
Where the M4 feels like a performance car first, the M8 leans more into presence. You notice it straight away. The long bonnet, the size, the way it carries itself on the road, it just feels like a bigger, more expensive car. And that’s because it was. Originally, the M8 sat in a completely different price bracket. Now, you can pick one up for around £55,000, which changes the conversation entirely.
At that level, you’re getting:
A twin-turbo V8
Four seats
Convertible options
Genuine long-distance comfort
It’s not just a fast car, it’s a full package.
Everyday Usability
This is where the M8 starts to pull away slightly. The M4 is great fun, but it always feels switched on. It’s the car you take out when you want to drive. The M8 is different. It can do that, but it can also settle down and cruise comfortably. It’s just as capable of covering long distances as it is delivering performance when you want it. It’s the kind of car that can handle both sides of driving without compromise.
So, Which One Wins?
The honest answer is that it depends on what you want from the car. If you’re after something sharp, engaging and more focused on driving feel, the M4 Competition is the obvious choice. It’s the one most people will naturally lean towards. But if you want something that combines performance with presence, comfort and a more refined feel, the M8 Competition becomes very hard to ignore. Both cars are seriously capable. Both deliver performance at a level that’s more than enough for everyday driving. But they appeal in different ways. The M4 is the one that feels like it’s always ready to go. The M8 is the one that feels like it doesn’t need to try. And at current prices, the M8 starts to make a very strong case for itself. For us, especially heading into summer, it’s hard to ignore that combination of performance, comfort and presence. It just feels like the more complete car.
